-- Mercer County Health Department:  $4 million has been requested for the Mercer County Commission, Princeton, West Virginia, to replace the more than 50 year-old Mercer County Health Department building that has serious structural deficiencies, hazardous air quality, and dangerous levels of mold growth.  The new facility will house the Mercer County Health Department and the Mercer County Health Right, and will serve approximately 32,000 patients per year.

 

-- Satellite Primary Care Health Center in Gilbert:  $3 million has been requested for the Town of Gilbert, West Virginia, for the development of and equipment for a satellite primary care health center in Gilbert, a medically underserved area, and recently devastated by major flooding.

 

-- American Federation for the Blind's Technology and Employment Center (AFB-TECH): $1.5 million has been requested for the American Federation for the Blind's Technology and Employment Center (AFB-TECH), Huntington, West Virginia, to expand the capacity of the center for development of technology that will help to improve lives and employment opportunities for the visually impaired. 

 

-- InfantSEE program:  $500,000 has been requested for the American Optometric Association, Alexandria, Virginia, to expand the reaches of the InfantSEE program in West Virginia.  This program provides a free, one-time, comprehensive eye exam to infants in their first year of life, usually between the ages of 6 and 12 months, and has been highly utilized in West Virginia

 

-- West Virginia Prevention Resource Center: $3 million has been requested for continuing funding for the West Virginia Prevention Resource Center in Charleston, West Virginia, to help local substance abuse organizations in eighteen counties better understand and combat the growing epidemic of substance abuse in their communities. 

 

-- United Mine Workers of America Career Centers: $1.9 million has been requested for continuation of mine rescue team training at the United Mine Workers of America Career Centers in Beckley, West Virginia, and Washington, Pennsylvania

 

-- Multiple Sclerosis Center:  $4 million has been requested for continuing funding for the completion of a Multiple Sclerosis Center at West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia.  The Center will provide research capabilities into cures and treatments for multiple sclerosis, as well as provide support services for families, whose loved ones are suffering from the debilitating disease. 

 

-- Public Higher Education Center:  $7 million has been requested for the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission to plan, construct, and equip an expansion of  facilities at the Public Higher Education Center in Beaver, West Virginia, with a focus on allied health and vocational education.  This expansion would help to meet the high demand for health-related and technical occupations, and consequently, help to raise the standard of living and increase economic development opportunities in Southern West Virginia.
 
-- $500,000 for Kanawha County Schools, Charleston, West Virginia, for the continuation of the Skills West Virginia program (formerly known as the Following the Leaders program), a program to assist teachers implement the academic goals of No Child Left Behind to improve student achievement.
