Appalachian-Turkish Trade Project

The U.S. Department of Commerce Trade Seminar
March 23, 2001
National Conservation Training Center
Shepherdstown, West Virginia

Trade between the United States and the Republic of Turkey is increasing steadily.  The Turkish market presents sales opportunities for small- and medium-sized businesses throughout Appalachia.  This initial seminar was designed to encourage new relationships between Appalachian and Turkish business interests.  Seminars will be planned for other regions of Appalachia in the coming months.

The March 23 program included remarks by West Virginia Governor Bob Wise; one-on-one consultations with visiting Turkish business representatives; marketing and industry sector reviews by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Senior Commercial Officer in Turkey; panel discussions on export marketing, finance, and industry sector opportunities; networking opportunities with successful U.S. exporters; and keynote remarks by U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd.

Project Goals
The trade seminar was being designed to educate entrepreneurs in West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland about the business and investment opportunities that are available with Turkish partners, and what the future may hold for companies seeking to do business in Turkey.
