Senator Robert C. Byrd started the Appalachian-Turkish Trade Project to build economic ties between the 13-state Appalachian region and the Republic of
Turkey. |

Welcome Members of Congress from the 13-state Appalachian region have launched a trade initiative with the Republic of Turkey, a nation that the U.S. Department of Commerce has
described as one of global top ten "Big Emerging Markets." Over the past decade, the Turkish government has fostered a fast-growing market economy and strengthened regional
stability. I hope that this trade initiative will take advantage of these advances. My goal is to foster a trade relationship that is mutually beneficial and that builds on the great economic
potential of both the Republic of Turkey and Appalachian states, particularly the State of West Virginia. Most recently, more than 200 business and government representatives from West
Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Republic of Turkey gathered in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, to open new channels of communication and to
explore new opportunities for commercial ties. The event was a great success. Other trade seminars will be planned for other Appalachian states.
In this Internet site, you will find details about the trade initiative's projects and events, facts about the Turkish market, and links to other sites with more
information that might be helpful. Be sure to check back for updates. Sincerely,
