Senator Byrd

Leadership.      Character.      Commitment.

U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd

Beckley VA Medical Center

The Beckley Veterans Affairs Medical Center, serving veterans in eleven counties in West Virginia and one in Virginia, is a general medicine and surgical facility.  Upon learning of the serious need for an expansion of the medical center, through my position on the Senate Appropriations Committee, I promoted the construction of a clinical addition/renovation project at the medical center.

Beckley VAMCMy efforts helped to enable the Beckley VA Medical Center, which was built in 1950, to renovate approximately 53,000 square feet and add approximately 69,000 square feet to the existing facility.  The clinical addition/renovation initiative, completed in 1994, has enabled the center to expand outpatient and rehabilitation services for veterans.  The additional space provided by the expansion has also allowed for the introduction of telemedicine technology and a health care program designed specifically to address the needs of women.

In addition to providing a full range of services for area veterans, the Medical Center supports two clinics in Beckley and Princeton, which provide outreach services, such as  post traumatic stress disorder counseling, and an array of social services to veterans.  The Medical Center is also academically affiliated with several colleges and universities in West Virginia and Virginia.
