Making Medicines Affordable
Senator Byrd Focuses on Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage

The Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage Act

This legislation would provide important access to local pharmacies and to needed medicines.

Access to local pharmacies.  Pharmacists offer important services that need to be protected in any prescription drug plan for Medicare's elderly and disabled beneficiaries.  Private entities administering the benefit would be required to ensure convenient access to pharmacies.  Entities could not force beneficiaries to travel long distances or to use mail order to get the drugs that they need.

Access to needed drugs.  Private entities would be allowed to use a wide range of tools for controlling drug costs, including the use of formularies.  However, the bill guarantees coverage for a drug that a doctor determines is medically necessary, even if the drug is not on the formulary.
