In the legislation, beneficiaries who choose to participate in the prescription drug initiative would pay an affordable premium. Medicare would pay for more than half of the premium
costs, making the program affordable for all Medicare beneficiaries. Beneficiaries with incomes over 175 percent of poverty (about $20,000 for a couple) would pay premiums that cover 45 percent of the cost of
coverage. Between 135 and 175 percent of poverty, beneficiaries would receive assistance with premiums on a sliding scale. Beneficiaries with incomes below 135 percent of poverty (about $15,000 for a couple)
would pay nothing for premiums or cost sharing. |
