Washington, DC – Senator Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., today announced that he has secured $200,000 for repairs to the historic Capitol Theatre in Wheeling.  The money was included by Byrd into the Fiscal Year 2010 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill as part of the “Save America’s Treasures” program. Byrd is the senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and also a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior.   President Obama signed the legislation into law on October 30, 2009.

The 2500-seat, 81-year old Capitol Theatre in Wheeling, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recently re-opened after being closed for more than two years for fire safety issues.  Additional work needs to be completed to restore it to its former grandeur.  The funding Byrd secured will be used to repair the theatre’s terra cotta façade and the roof of the historic building.

“Anyone who has ever been to the Capitol Theatre knows what a gem it is, as well as its role as an anchor for a revitalized downtown Wheeling,” said Byrd. “I was pleased to be able to secure funding to help in this significant restoration effort.”

According to recent reports, it is estimated that the cost to complete the restoration is $3.3 million.
