National Service Academy Nominations
In the spring of an applicant's junior year in high school, I accept requests for nominations to the following national service academies:

Air Force Academy
Colorado Springs, Colorado  80840

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
Kings Point, New York  11024

U.S. Military Academy
West Point, New York  10996

U.S. Naval Academy
Annapolis, Maryland  21402

Please be sure to contact the service academy of your preference to establish your pre-candidate file.  Each academy has established its own criteria for admission that takes into consideration Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Testing program (ACT) scores, extracurricular activities, and leadership potential.  Ultimate selection of appointees rests solely with academy officials and is based on their competitive evaluation of all nominees. Bear in mind that acceptance of an appointment commits an applicant to five years of active duty service after graduation.

Applicants must be:

  • U.S. Citizens;
  • Legal residents of West Virginia;
  • At least 17 years of age, but not yet 22 years of age, by July 1 of the year of admission; and
  • Unmarried with no dependents.

To request a nomination from my office, please write to me at:

 U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd
