Robert C. Byrd Youth Summit 2000

Throughout the discussion and debate on school safety and youth violence, one voice has been missing -- that of the students.  This summit provided students the opportunity to share their experiences and their unique insights.

Goals of the Youth Summit

  • To provide students with a voice in the discussion on reducing juvenile violence;
  • To better identify factors that place young people at risk of committing violent acts;
  • To gather input from students about intervention strategies which are aimed at reducing youth violence;
  • To mobilize West Virginia's student leaders to examine new ways to better ensure the safety of their teachers and fellow students;
  • To hear new ideas and strategies about safety initiatives which are effective; and
  • To open greater channels of communication between young people and their peers, and also between young people and their elected leaders.
